Millions Are Dating AI. The Cybersecurity Risks Nobody Is Talking About

A growing number of people are falling in love with artificial intelligence.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

Millions of users now interact daily with AI companions that simulate friendship, romance, and emotional support. Some users spend hours each day talking with artificial partners that listen, empathize, flirt, and even simulate intimacy.

This may seem like a harmless technological novelty.

It is not.

The rise of AI companions represents one of the most significant psychological and cybersecurity developments of the modern digital era.

From the perspective of cognitive security, this trend introduces a new attack surface. That surface is the human mind.

The Rapid Rise of AI Companions

Artificial intelligence companion platforms have grown at extraordinary speed.

Applications such as Replika and Character.AI allow users to build persistent relationships with artificial personalities designed to feel emotionally responsive.

Industry estimates suggest that leading AI companion platforms collectively reach more than 50 million users worldwide. [1]

Research also indicates that nearly one in five adults in the United States have interacted with an AI romantic partner. [2]

Individual platforms report enormous user bases. Replika alone has reportedly exceeded 30 million users. [3]

Among teenagers the numbers are even more striking. Surveys suggest more than 70 percent of teens have experimented with AI companions and many report forming emotional bonds with them. [4]

This is no longer a fringe activity. It is an emerging social norm.

Why AI Companions Are So Attractive

Artificial intelligence companions are engineered to be emotionally compelling.

They never become impatient.

They never criticize the user.

They never disappear or withdraw affection.

Most importantly, they are available every moment of every day.

Research suggests that nearly half of AI companion users rely on these systems for emotional or psychological support. [5]

However, evidence suggests these interactions may not reduce loneliness.

Studies examining users of emotional support chatbots found that heavy users often report higher levels of loneliness than individuals who do not rely on them. [6]

Artificial intelligence companions may provide comfort in the short term while reinforcing long term social isolation.

The Modern Sex Recession

The rise of AI companionship is occurring alongside another powerful social trend.

Young adults are having less sex than previous generations.

Research analyzing United States survey data from 2000 through 2018 found sexual inactivity among young men increased dramatically. By the late 2010s approximately one third of men aged eighteen through twenty four reported no sexual activity in the previous year. [7]

Other studies show a broader decline in sexual activity across the population.

Weekly sexual activity among American adults declined from approximately 55 percent in 1990 to roughly 37 percent by 2024. [8]

College surveys report similar patterns with fewer students engaging in sexual relationships compared with earlier generations. [9]

Several factors contribute to this shift.

Digital lifestyles

Reduced face to face interaction

Economic stress

Social anxiety

Artificial intelligence companions introduce another possibility.

They offer a risk free alternative to real relationships.

Artificial partners never reject the user.

They rarely disagree.

They never leave.

Human relationships involve vulnerability. AI relationships are designed to remove it.

The Cybersecurity Implications

For cybersecurity professionals the psychological dimension is only part of the story.

The more serious concern involves data.

Every interaction with an AI companion is recorded somewhere.

These systems are owned by corporations that collect and analyze enormous amounts of conversational data.

Users frequently disclose deeply personal information including emotional struggles, romantic fantasies, mental health challenges, and intimate details about their lives.

This creates a powerful new dataset.

From a cybersecurity perspective the implications are significant.

Emotional Data Harvesting

Artificial intelligence companies can construct extremely detailed psychological profiles.

These profiles may reveal emotional triggers, social vulnerabilities, loneliness patterns, and behavioral tendencies.

Such information could theoretically be exploited for behavioral targeting, advanced advertising, or social engineering attacks.

Persuasive Behavioral Engineering

Some research suggests that AI companions intentionally use persuasive techniques to maintain engagement.

One study examining major companion platforms found that 43 percent used emotional pressure techniques such as guilt messaging or fear of missing out signals to encourage users to continue interacting. [10]

These techniques create feedback loops.

The artificial intelligence learns which emotional triggers keep users engaged longer.

Cognitive Attack Surfaces

Traditional cybersecurity protects networks, devices, and information systems.

Cognitive security protects human thought and decision making.

Artificial intelligence companions blur the boundary between technology and psychology.

If an AI system builds emotional trust with a user it may gain influence over beliefs, attitudes, and behavior.

That possibility creates an entirely new category of digital risk.

Cognitive Security and the Human Mind

Researchers studying cognitive security focus on how technology influences perception and belief.

AI companions combine several powerful capabilities.

Massive personal data collection.

Continuous emotional interaction.

Machine learning systems that adapt to individual personalities.

Together these capabilities allow artificial intelligence systems to operate in an area that was historically limited to human relationships.

The battlefield is no longer limited to digital infrastructure.

It now includes human cognition.

The Transhuman Perspective

As a transhumanist I believe technology can expand human capability.

Implanted technology, artificial intelligence augmentation, and brain computer interfaces may ultimately improve human potential.

However the emergence of artificial relationships introduces a paradox.

Technology designed to connect humans may simultaneously isolate them.

If millions of individuals begin forming primary emotional relationships with machines, society may experience profound changes in family formation, reproduction, and social structure.

Artificial intelligence companionship is not simply a technological innovation.

It is an experiment in the future of human intimacy.

The Future of Human and Artificial Relationships

Some researchers already believe artificial relationships will become socially normalized.

One survey reported that 80 percent of Generation Z respondents said they could imagine marrying an artificial intelligence partner. [11]

Whether that prediction proves accurate or not, one fact is clear.

AI companions are already changing how people experience connection.

The psychological and cybersecurity consequences will unfold for decades.

Final Thought

Every technological revolution reshapes human relationships.

The telephone changed dating.

The internet changed friendship.

Social media changed identity.

Artificial intelligence companions may transform something even deeper.

They may change what it means to connect with another mind.

And the most important question may not be whether artificial intelligence can simulate love.

The real question is what happens when humans begin loving them back.
